What is a HMRC Tax Rebate?
In simple terms, a tax rebate is due when an employed taxpayer has paid too much tax during a financial tax year and is eligible to claim some back. Self-employed taxpayers can also be due a tax rebate through the Self-Assessment system.
It is important for you to find out if you have overpaid tax, because there are various electable tax breaks available to UK taxpayers which most people may not be aware of and are not automatically applied to their tax accounts unless they are claimed for, from HMRC.

Uniform Tax
Uniform Tax Rebate
If you wear or have worn a uniform or protective clothing at work over the past 4 years, which you must wash and maintain yourself, you may be due a tax refund from HMRC. This allowance can be backdated for up to 4 years.

What You Need To Apply For a Uniform Tax Rebate:
- Your work history for the past 4 years. This does not need to be accurate to the exact day, but it should be a good approximation of when you started and left jobs since April 2018.
- Your job role and the industry you worked in for each particular job you are claiming for.
- The full name of your employer, as was stated in your wage slips. HMRC will reject claims if the employer’s name does not match what is on your tax record.
- From April 6th, 2022, HMRC will fast track Uniform Allowance claims processing times from the existing 12-16 weeks to 14 days for customers. This only applies if you are able to provide your PAYE reference and employee number for each of the jobs you are applying for in your application. This can be found on any of your payslips.
- Your personal details including your National Insurance number.

Fess & Subscription
Tax Rebate On Professional Fees & Subscriptions
UK tax-paying employees are allowed to claim tax rebate on their annual professional fees or subscriptions to some HMRC-approved professional organizations. The costs are tax-deductible generally where the individual must have a membership to do their job, or it is helpful for their work.

- Name of the Professional body or Union you have been paying.
- The amount you have paid each individual tax year since April 2018

Mileage Tax
Mileage Tax Relief/Rebate
Work Mileage Tax Allowance is a tax relief from the HMRC which allows you to deduct the costs of business trips from your income.
This tax relief could be worth up to 45p for every mile you have travelled since April 2015.

What You Need To Apply For a Mileage Tax Relief:
- Your work history for the past 4 years. This does not need to be accurate to the exact day, but it should be a good approximation of when you started and left jobs since April 2018
- The total number of miles you have travelled each year for work-related tasks, not including commuting to your permanent place of work
- How much your employer has reimbursed you each year.
- The reason(s) for the travel
- Your National Insurance number

Marriage Tax
Marriage Allowance Rebate
The marriage Tax Allowance allows a couple to transfer 10% of the lower-earning partner’s personal tax allowance to the higher-earning partner. This, simply put, means the higher earner will pay less tax.
What You Need To Apply For a Marriage Tax Rebate:
- The approximate income brackets for yourself and your partner for each of the past 4 years
- Both your and your partner’s personal details such as National Insurance numbers
- You will also both be required to sign the application as this is a joint application for electable tax-break
On average, this Tax Rebate pays back the highest. All eligible married couples should get this tax relief.

PPI Tax
PPI Tax Refund
If you have received payment for mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) since April 2018, you could be eligible for a PPI Tax Refund. As per this Insurance scheme, most banks/lenders will have incorrectly deducted 20% tax automatically.

What You Need To Apply For PPI Tax Refund:
- The year(s) you received your PPI pay-out
- The name of the lender/bank who refunded your PPI payments.
- An estimate of the amount which was refunded to you by each bank/lender
- The total amount of tax deducted which can be found on your “Final Response Letter” from your bank or lender.
If you no longer have your Final Response Letter, you can request a copy from your bank or lender which they are legally obliged to provide you.
